"School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem-solving, communicating expectations, and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. "
Managerial Leadership
Standard 5A describes how a focus on budget process and systems can result in increased student achievement
- I completed a budget allocation project detailing how the strategic alignment of school funds to achieve school goals can improve the culture and performance of a school as a project in my graduate course. To focus on how school budgeting processess can impact student achievement, I led a collaborative decision making process with the "school improvement team" (cohort members) to define the school improvement goal and determine the most effective strategy to achieve that goal. I then completed a comprehensive needs assessment of Benson Middle School and allocated exependable PRC allotment totals to fund the strategic achievement of the school's improvement goal.
- In my intership I have collaborated with my mentor principal to use RESTART and Focus Intervention funding sources to provide tutors (retired and aspiring teachers) . The addition of extra personnel in grades K-1 was a response to discipline data I analyzed detailing increased incidents in the 4 lower elementary classrooms with a rotating assistant. We also collaborated to create and fund an after-school tutoring program for grades 3-5 that can pay staff for their involvement. I learned how to calculate salaries with social security and retirement in order to create a sustainable plan.
Standard 5B describes how effective and efficient management of the complexity of human interactions ensuresthe focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
- To effectively and efficiently handle the complexity of adult interaction, I have completed training courses on the researched based conflict management framework Crucial Conversations, and Crucial Accountabiliy. I have had experience with holding accountability conversations with students, tutors, teachers and custodial staff. The ability to recognize an issue and taking urgent action to communicate effectively to solve it conveys the school leaders desire to maintain a positive school culture that is focused on improving student achievement.
- To effectively and efficiently handle the complexity of adolescent interaction, I have completed training courses on the researched based conflict management frameworks of Restorative Justice, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. I utilize the restorative justice framework by modeling the use of Restorative Circles for behavior intervention. I am a first responder, and NCVI trained. I have had to use de-escalation techniques learned in both Restorative Justice and NCVI to handle emotionally intense situations with students in the elementary and middle school settings.
Standard 5C describes how designing and utilizing various forms of formal and informal communication can focus of the school on improved student achievement.
- I design and deliver informal weekly newsletters to the entire staff detailing up comming events, announcements, and district updates.
- I utilize formal (documents) and informal (social media) communication to parents notifying them of school events such as fall festival, the Black History Program, the Coker-Wimberly Community Connection and spring tutoring services.
Standard 5D describes how the school leader develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules, and procedures for students and staff
- I communicate and clearly enforce district expectations, structures, rules and procedures for staff by completings formal and informal evaluations delivering actions steps from the "Get Better Faster" instructional coahing scope and sequence. I have focused on enforcing expectations when evaluating teachers within the NCEES evaluation system. I have had the opportunity to pre conference, observe, and post conference with teachers, guidance counselors, multi classroom leader and media center specialist. I focus on enforcing school expectations when pre conferencing by asking questions about the implementation of the schools instructional expectations in the lesson and administering a bite size action step with an implemention follow up date.
- I communicate and clearly enforce district expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students by processing school and bus refferals, contacting parents, and hosting restorative justice circles with students as behavior interventions. I have hosted Restorative Circles with students and bus drivers, siblings, and groups of girls and boys as a part of my approach to teaching new behaviors while holding students accountable for past actions. This approach create a sense of trust amongst students and staff that I believe you can meet the school’s expectations and that I will support you until you achieve.
