Instructional Leadership
"The school executive must be knowledgeable of best instructional and school practices and must use this knowledge to cause the creation of collaborative structures within the school for the design of highly engaging schoolwork for students, the ongoing peer review of this work, and the sharing of this work throughout the professional community. "
Standard 2A describes how the school leader focuses the school on researched based practices to improve student achievement.
- This year to build teacher capacity and strengthen core instruction, our school implemented the iReady curriculum for grades K-5 in the subjects of reading and math. I created a Data Driven Instruction calendar for the kindergarten math curriculum to align the schools iReady math curriculum pacing to the Kindergarten state math assessment. This document was used by a teacher that I coach to support her curriculum alignment and pacing as it is her first year teaching this grade.
- To support the departmentalized K-2 math department, I created a K-2 Math Continuum of standard unpacking and tasks that demonstrate mastery. Teachers used the continuum to create lesson plans and common formative assessments in order to differentiate instruction and assignments for students.
- Standard 2B describes how the school leader can positively impact student achievement by creating a schedule that adheres to time mandates and allows for collaborative planning time for educational professionals.
- The north side of our district implemented the Opportunity Culture Design framework to improve student achievement by expanding the impact of highly effective teachers, creating time for collaboration and re-imagining "what" school looks like. I collaborated with the Opportunity Culture design team, my mentor principal, and the Elementary Director to create a master schedule for year one and year two of the Opportunity Culture Initiative. The schedule accounted for a departmentalized school in grades K-5 minus grade 3, Enhancement team push in support, and 90 minutes of collaborative planning time for teachers.
